Almadén de la Plata - Monesterio

34, 5 km Difficulty
You leave Almadén de la Plata from the bullring, around the Cerro de los Covachos and past the Casa de la Postura. You have to cross a stone bridge paying close attention to the signage. There is a detour sign you have to follow to go back to the gravel road across the grazing lands, in a nice stretch with some ups and downs.

The road connects to the Camino Viejo de Almadén de la Plata, leading to El Real de la Jara, where there is a hostel for those who would like to spend the night there. This village still belongs to the Natural Park Parque Natural de la Sierra Norte de Sevilla and there you can see the church of San Bartolomé and, close to it, the medieval 14th-century castle, currently being restored.

You have to leave the castle to you right to cross the stream of La Víbora, which is the natural border between Andalusia and Extremadura, to enter the province of Badajoz. From here you can see the ruins of Castillo de las Torres. The path overlaps with the autovía A-66 and the main road, which for some pilgrims is the best option to continue until Puerto de la Cruz.

From here you have less than 2 kilometres to Monesterio, where you may see the church of San Pedro and the visitor’s centre of Vía de la Plata. This town is named after the monastery of Santa María de Tentundía, which is actually 9 kilometres away and not on the Camino, on the highest hilltop in Badajoz.

Tips from our postmen and women

When you access Monesterio from the Real de la Jara, you can see the Museo del Jamón Ibérico de Monesterio, a museum devoted to our most relevant product: Ibérico ham. The visit offers a tour through grazing lands, explaining the traditional pig slaughter, uses of pork, etc...” Eladio Reyes, Correos of Monesterio.
