Uviéu/Oviedo - Gráu/Grado

Gráu/Grado - Salas
26 km

The Original or Primitive Way departs from the historic city of Uviéu/Oviedo. Before you leave, do not miss the chance to visit it. You can start by walking around the Plaza del Fontán, where you will see the market (Mercado de Abastos) and the historic building of the University to then move to the Cathedral of San Salvador along the Calle Schultz where the Way begins. Follow the iron signs on the ground to reach the Avenida Príncipe de Asturias, to then cross the railway line. After exiting Uviéu/Oviedo and 5 kilometres away from the starting point you will reach San Lázaro de Paniceres and, after 7, Llampaxuga, where you will see the chapel of El Carmen.

After a deep descent, you go up to Llubrió with its church of Santa María. From there you descend to La Bolguina, where there is a tavern to take a break. You reach the bridge of Gallegos over the River Nora, and once you cross it through the road, you will reach
L´escampleru; after the last house, you can go right and go into a path flanked by chestnut trees. This is a beautiful place, but you have to descend to then go up a strenuous climb afterwards. If you would rather skip this beautiful chestnut grove, you can reach
L´Escampleru by road.

Paladín is located 20 kilometres away from the starting point after you cross the bridge of Peñaflor over the River Nalón. The village of Peñaflor is 300 m away, and you have to take a right to go under the railway line. After that, you enter Gráu/Grado. You can find all services in Gráu/Grado and in 2016 a new municipal hostel is expected to open here.

Gráu/Grado is a nice town with very well preserved indiano architecture, i.e., buildings built by migrants to the Americas. A walk in the Parque de San Antonio will lead you to the Palacio Miranda-Valdecarzana and the ruins of the medieval wall. Close by, you will find the town hall with its lively colours and the General Ponte square, where there is a traditional market particularly for bread.

Mariano Rodríguez
Mariano Rodríguez Correos Uviéu/Oviedo

“In Uviéu/Oviedo, there is a medieval fountain that is not always apparent to visitors: the fountain of La Foncalada located on the street of the same name. Pre-Romanesque buildings in Asturias are also interesting, for instance, the church of Santa María del Naranco, which is very close to Uviéu/Oviedo”
