A Rúa - Quiroga

26,3 km Difficulty
Following the right bank of the River Sil, the Winter Way leaves the province of Ourense and enters Lugo through the municipality of Quiroga. The village of Albaredos marks the 7-kilometre landmark.

The path continues between vineyards and olive trees in the village of Montefurado, with the church of San Miguel, to then go past Bendilló.  This whole area is called the Ribeira Sacra, and there is a Denomination of Origin for the wine produced there. Oil production in the area dates back to Roman times.  At the hilltop of Torre Novais, a castle was erected in the 13th century on an old castro (pre-Roman settlement). This place offers great views over the Sil.

There are another 4 kilometres to Quiroga if you take a detour you can see the Conjunto Monumental de Hospital, an ensemble with a Pre-Romanesque church (San Salvador), the 16th-century Casa Torre de Hospital and the Casa da Encomenda, of the same period.

Tips from our postmen and women

“I recommend the views over the valley and also visiting the tunnel of Montefurado (Hollow Mountain), which gives its name to the village. This is a Roman 2nd-century tunnel used to divert the river in order to extract gold, and it is said to be one of the best examples of Roman mining structures in Galicia. In Bendillo (Farrapas) you can visit a totally restored olive oil mill to know how oil is produced”. Pilar Diéguez, Correos of Quiroga.
